Imagine a job where when duty calls you have to be on point. Up and ready for the days up and down in's and out and whatever twist and turns can occur and believe me they will. You have to be willing to roll your sleeves up and get down to the nitty gritty. You cant be afraid to get dirty or smelly. And guess what? This is the life of everyday stay at home moms.
Opinions vary regarding what would comprise of a realistic income for stay-at-home moms. There are many opinions about whether being a stay-at-home mom should be classified as employment, in part due to the absence of usual employment perks, such as vacations, benefits, and break-times. I, myself, hold the view that being a stay-at-home mom is a very real job. In many ways it is more demanding than any other job there is. The boss here is the little one, dictating through tears and howls or pulls at your clothing when it is time to eat, time to sleep, time to play. And this doesn't get put on hold while managing the laundry, cleaning the house, paying bills, or doing any of the other duties affiliated with running a household. All those other obligations need to be juggled around the demands for attention, the diaper changes, the feedings, storytime, and doctor visits. The list could go on and on.
To the outsider unfamiliar with the inner workings, being a stay-at-home mom appears easy. But the mom at home knows the reality is quite the opposite. The discomfort and exasperation that a corporate woman would feel spending her days at home tending to children and household duties is most likely the same discomfort and exasperation a stay-at-home mom would feel functioning in the outside world, away from her children. Each being accustommed to the perks and demands of their particular station in life, not many would decide with full knowledge of the situation, to change places in a moment's notice.
Before we can begin to consider a realistic income for stay-at-home moms, let's consider a few more of the realities of the position. What gets done or doesn't get done, remains in place into the following day. This is a one-woman operation! All decisions rest on mom, severely guided by the little ones. There is no one to ask for a day off, or to request early leave. Everything revolves around the care and needs of the children.
Considering all the professions out there that you do get paid for lets see how many stay at home moms would qualify for those jobs. Lets see you have to be a nurse, a cook, a cleaner, a driver, a problem solver, a plumber (for all those moms out there whose kids realized the joy of throwing there toys down the toilet and watching them go wee.) a cook, a mastermind at organization, a expert stain remover, a hair dresser ( for that chunk of gum sitting in your daughters hair) a teacher, a cook, a waitress, a banker( to handle all those bills and finances), a accountant(because money doesn't grow on trees you know), A major saver (prices are going up on everything), a handyman to fix all those toys that you stepped on in the process of doing 10,000 things at once, a laundress and last but not least a wife.
So yeah we don't have to punch in at 9 and punch out at 5 or drive through grid lock traffic and deal with deadlines or bosses breathing done our necks. But our days start before 9 and never end at 5. We kept going and going until at least half of what we planned on doing for the day is done. We don't get all dressed up in our uniforms or put on business suits. But i would pick my outfit over any suit any day. It may not be as glamorous or luxurious. But its me. I would pick my sweats or jeans and a T-shirt over any designer suit.
Perhaps some think it possible to perform typical job duties to enhance the income of the household while at home with children. However, the reality is that in all likelihood, the income that might be earned would be less than it would cost to pay another for childcare for the entire week. The time it would take to earn anything substantial while being a stay-at-home mom would hardly be worth it. Stay-at-home moms learn that five minutes to relax with a good cup of tea takes precedence over any amount of money they could earn in those sacred five minutes that come too seldom.
In my opinion, about $15,000 per year, or more, depending on the number of children at home, would be somewhat of a realistic income for a stay-at-home mom. Some may argue, finding this amount to be too excessive. But even moms like to feel pampered from time to time, to be tended to, rather than always performing the tending. We like to smell nice and maybe even get a very rare afternoon to have lunch with the girls. We have to feel good about ourselves in order to do the fantastic job we do, rearing the world's future generation. Of course, the best form of payment is the daily kind: watching our kids grow, and being there with them, every step of the way. But still, a bit of monetary recognition wouldn't hurt either. Let's hear from all the stay-at-home moms and those who love them who agree.
