The History Of The Corset,

By: S. Roberts

The history of the corset began as far back as the Neolithic era. Evidence of corsets made from animal hides and tied with animal sinew was discovered at an archeological site Norfolk England. The corsets used during this period were laced down the front. Speculation is that the corsets were molded to the woman’s body while the animal pelts were still fresh and allowed to dry in the shape of the woman’s body. The term corset is derived from the French word "corps for body". It is a tight-fitting garment that is used to cover and tighten the torso and either pushes up or flattens the breasts.

The history of the corset extends through the 1700’s. Paintings from this period show that the style of the Minoans focused on tiny waists for both men and women. Men used belts to create a tiny waist, while the women wore fitted and laces corsets to have tiny waists. The use of corsets in other ancient civilizations can be seen depicted on pottery and other artwork. Pottery from Egypt, Greece, Rome, Crete, and Assyria often depicted women wearing corsets. In these cultures, women wore corsets for support while participating in strenuous activities. These activities included gymnastics and bullfighting. Roman masters and mistresses used corsets to show their superiority over their slaves. The low status of the slave was quickly noted by the presence of tightly laced corsets, while the masters and mistresses were dressed in loose-fitting attire.

From the earliest of civilizations, corsets were used to give a woman the "perfect" figure. In many cultures, the corset was used to set the elite apart from the common people. Sometimes, the restricting garments were worn by the lower class, while at other times throughout history, the elite wore corsets. During the Victorian era, physicians fought to get rid of corsets because they believed that tightly laced corsets posed physical dangers for women – maladies that included anything from fainting to kidney failure. Many women’s illnesses were blamed on wearing these constricting garments. The term "loose woman" has a different meaning today than it did during the periods when corsets were a popular trend. During those times, a "loose woman" was considered to be a woman whose corset laces were slack. Today, the term carries a totally different meaning.

As has most often been associated with the history of the corset, today corsets are considered a very sexy undergarment. While modern fashion does not dictate that women wear a corset underneath their clothing, the corset is a very popular item in women’s lingerie. Today’s woman needs less restriction as the role of the woman has changed and has expanded into the world of sports and other areas that require more freedom of movement. But, the corset remains one of the sexiest undergarments that a woman can wear – giving her the much sought after hourglass figure for the appropriate moments.
