I’m sure a lot of you have had headaches over the first few weeks of this NFL season. You’ve studied up and decided who to pick and which games to bet on, only to have the complete opposite happen. That can be frustrating but you have to remember these rules when betting on the NFL:
• Every season in the NFL is different, and being good one year doesn’t always translate to being
good the next.
• Injuries can dramatically change anything in an instant.
• The top rated teams face every other team’s best every week, and
• The up and coming, underrated teams can take people by surprise.
With those rules in mind, let’s look at a few teams across the league and see whether they have been in a decline or on the rise.
New England Patriots: The Patriots are down, but not out. They lost Tom Brady for the year which really takes them out of title contention. But, they still have a core of solid players and a strong coaching staff. Don’t pick against them just because they don’t have Brady, but don’t pick them to win every week either.
New York Giants: The Giants are on the rise. Wait, how can the Super Bowl Champions be on the rise you ask? Well, with the retirement of Michael Strahan and the loss of Osi Umenyiora for the entire year, many people were predicting the Giants to not even make the playoffs. Their win last year was regarded as a fluke. But so far this season Eli Manning has been playing with poise and intelligence and the defense has still looked fierce. They are still the champions until somebody else takes it from them.
Tennessee Titans: Vince who? The Titans have started the 2008 NFL season very strongly, and that’s in large part due to a frightening defense. Anchored by a strong defensive line led by Albert Haynesworth, the Titans have been dominating the opposition. Vince Young has been replaced with Kerry Collins, and if the team keeps on winning, it will be hard to take Collins out of the lineup, even if Young is healthy.
Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings are down, and that’s not because they were great last season. That’s because the team had very strong expectations for 2008. Adrian Peterson might be the best back in the league and the team brought in defensive end Jarred Allen to add to a solid defense. But just a few weeks into the season, Tarvaris Jackson has been replaced and the team has suffered a few tough defeats.
Cleveland Browns: What was anybody thinking when they picked the Cleveland Browns to be one of the best teams in the AFC this season? Yes, they won a bunch of games in 2007, but they are the Cleveland Browns! C’mon! The Browns have fallen back to their normal domain of also-ran, so you shouldn’t bet on them any time in the near future.
These are just a few of the up and down teams so far in the 2008 season. Before you start wasting all of your money on online betting, make sure you do just a bit of quick research and find out who’s who and what’s what.
