By: SimonSkinner

Horse racing encompasses Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing as well as harness racing. Out of 50 states, only 15 do not have a horse race track of some kind. Many have multiple tracks. With almost 100 race tracks that host Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing and more than 50 harness race tracks in the United States, it is no wonder that horse racing of all sorts is one of our favorite pastimes.

Many of us are familiar with the most famous tracks even if we've never been there. Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Kentucky is probably the most famous Thoroughbred race track in the United States. Home of the Kentucky Derby, some of the most famous race horses in history have competed here. Secretariat's record for 1-1/4 miles at Churchill Downs in 1973 still stands.

Santa Anita Park in California is arguably the most famous Thoroughbred track on the West Coast. Home to the prestigious Breeders' Cup, which is made up of 14 races in all, Santa Anita has also seen some of the most famous horses run on its track. Seabiscuit, Silky Sullivan, Big Brown and other racing greats have flown across this historic track.

Pimlico is another famous Thoroughbred track. It hosts the Preakness Stakes, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown. Scene of Barbaro's heartbreaking accident in the 2006 Preakness, Pimlico has renamed the Sir Barton Stakes after Barbaro.

Ruidoso Downs holds meets for both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Home of the All American Futurity for Quarter Horses, this track is one of the few that hosts this brand of horse racing. Galobar, a chestnut filly by the famous Three Bars, won the very first Futurity in 1959, beginning a tradition that today brings in a purse of over a million dollars.

Buffalo Raceway is home to harness racing's Breeders' Cup World Championships. Featuring two days of solid championship racing, this is one of harness racing's biggest events of the year. Located in Buffalo, New York, the track has been open since 1942.

Yonkers Raceway was founded in 1899. Beginning in 1907, harness racing was replaced by Thoroughbred racing. This lasted through 1943, and one of the many famous horses that ran on this track was Seabiscuit. Harness racing returned to the track, and it is home to three major events in the harness racing year, including the Yonkers Trot, the Art Rooney Pace and the Messenger Stakes. The Yonkers Trot and the Messenger Stakes are each legs of the Triple Crown competitions for trotters and pacers.

Saratoga Raceway opened in 1941, making history as the third racetrack in the country to offer pari-mutuel betting. Considered one of the most beautiful half mile tracks in the country, Saratoga still draws fans from all over every year during the racing season.

The Meadowlands is home to the famous Hambletonian race, harness racing's biggest event of the year. Named after Hambletonian, the founding sire of the Standardbred breed, this race attracts the best of the best in trotting. If you have the chance to witness this amazing race, don't miss it.
